Three Things You Need to Know About Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening, also called “bleaching,” is one of the most commonly asked about procedures in the dental office. And why not? Almost everyone wants to have a bright white smile and most people feel that their teeth simply are not as white as they’d like. Tooth whitening is a great way to improve not just the look of your teeth, but your overall appearance as well. There are many different ways to whiten teeth, but regardless of which method you choose, here are three things to keep in mind.

Tooth Whitening is Not Permanent

Some patients mistakenly believe that tooth whitening is a one-time fix, but the truth is that teeth can easily revert to darker shades over time. This is especially true if you drink lots of coffee or red wine, or if you are a smoker. There are ways to help maintain the whiteness, such as periodically using over the counter bleaching strips or having your dentist make custom bleaching trays for at-home use.

Tooth Sensitivity May be an Issue

Due to the simple physiologic nature of how tooth whitening works, it often leaves the teeth feeling somewhat sensitive afterwards. This may be more pronounced with some in-office treatments, which are generally much stronger than over-the-counter options. However, some modern bleaching mediums contain desensitizing chemicals, so talk to your dentist about which one is right for you if you are concerned about sensitivity.

Insurance Will Not Cover Tooth Whitening

When it comes to dental treatment, one of the first questions most people ask is “Will my insurance pay for this.” In regards to tooth whitening, the short answer is no. Because whitening the teeth has no health benefit, it is purely cosmetic and therefore not covered.
