DENTAL IMPLANTS

How Do I Know If I am a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a revolutionary treatment that has the potential to change the lives of patients. Steadily increasing in popularity over the last few decades, implants are at the forefront of dental technology and are, without debate, the best solution for replacing one or more missing teeth. Like most treatments, though, there are certain caveats. Not everyone is an ideal dental implant candidate. Here are 5 ways to tell if dental implants are right for you.

  • You have good oral home care. By the same token, you must consistently exhibit good oral hygiene practices, like brushing and flossing every day. Although implants and implant crowns cannot develop cavities, they are susceptible to diseases involving the gums and bone, and must be cared for just as if they were natural teeth.

  • You have good bone volume and density. Implants are dependent upon an ample supply of healthy bone in the site in which they are to be placed. There are procedures that can increase bone levels, but abundant natural, healthy bone is best.
  • You are patient. Dental implants require a notable time investment, usually anywhere from 6 to 12 months to completion. This is because the implant post itself must fuse with the bone before a crown can be placed. This process is time consuming but well worth the wait.

Whether you are missing one or 32 teeth, dental implants may be the perfect treatment for you. Talk to your dentist to find out if you are a good candidate for this state-of-the-art treatment.
